Catherine Ogletree

Catherine Ogletree (1831-1895)

Catherine Ogletree was an abolitionist, writer, and advocate for women’s suffrage. The descendant of Puritans, she resided most of her life at her family home in Mt. Auburn Street and never married. She was a lifelong disciple of William Lloyd Garrison and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. In 1854 she joined the crowd which stormed the Suffolk County Courthouse in Boston in an unsuccessful attempt to free fugitive slave Anthony Burns. From an early age, she wrote and published pamphlets on behalf of such antislavery luminaries as Lydia Maria Child, David Ruggles and Sojourner Truth. She also wrote several volumes of poetry, most of which was brought out via vanity press.

Catherine Ogletree is a fictional character created for Cambridge Historical Tours.
